You are right, these packages are incompatible (at least partially).
This is exactly the reason why jed-0.99.17.nnn is not yet in unstable
but in experimental.

They have screwed it up by combining jed-0.99.17 (and SLang2)
with jed-extra (if both are on Ubuntu and not only combined on your box
by installing from different repositories.


We are in the process of releasing a "slang-2-safe" version of
jed-extra. If you want to help testing, I can mail you a copy of the
unpublished new version or you get it via SVN (see
http://pkg-jed.alioth.debian.org/).

Alternatively, you could go to http://jedmodes.sf.net/ and selectively
install up to date upstream sources (preferabely in a private ~/.jed/lib/
directory). (Report problems with a current mode from Jedmodes to its
author or the Jedmodes users list jedmodes-users at lists.sourceforge.net.)
