I suppose similar problems can occur with index files too. the problem is that kmail always trust .index/.uidcache files, even when the previous kio_imap4 run crashed, or last kmail crashed.

a simple workaround would be that when a transaction is started with that or this folder, a file stating it must be created (like a lock file). that MUST be done with care. if that file already exists, then NOTHING must be done, and the user must be warned that something went wrong, that he should backup the mail in that folder somewhere else, kmail then *HAS* to sync that folder from scratch (invalidating its whole .index/.uidcache files completely, not trusting them *AT ALL*) and let the user take the files that he backed up back if needed.

kmail could even automatize that, and let the user use the ^-* shortcut to avoid useless dupes, or ...
