I think KDE GUI parts (like kicker) but also applications (like kopete) block sometimes due to this bug because the KMail subsystem widely integrates with the KDE system (kopete using the adressbook, KMail using the kopete online status, kicker having kmail applets or systray applets running). When I start KMail after the weekend at work and it checks many mails and blocks due to running the spam filter, I cannot work with several parts of KDE: Kopete blocks, konqueror starts up very slowly or even after kmail has finished, Kopete blocks. Even Kopete startup makes kmail and parts of KDE blocking. I suppose this is all related. KMail should fork a thread for filter actions and manage a queue for running it.
