And I would not, because offline mail data is crucial for people who have a 
laptop and will want to access their e-mail when travelling or when working 
at a remote location where there might be no Internet connectivity.

True. Offline requirements for just e-mail could easily be met with POP.

On a sidenote though, I no longer experience this bug - or at best it's 
dormant and not frequent like it could be in the past. Then again my ISP 
changed mail server software as well a couple of months ago so I can't rule 
out there's a server-side variable in the behaviour.

Still I think it's best if this bug would remain open until all of the ID 
error catching as thoroughly describe by (was it Till? Adam? I forgot.) and 
there is a better argument for closing it than "it seems to be dormant".
