Agreed versioned symbols would make life a lot smoother...

I'm no expert, but adding versioned symbols should be transparent, in that 
they will only be applied to systems, where they can be used, and other 
systems (ie non linux) won't use then.

That said, I'm not entirely sure how to integrated versioned symbols into kde 
libs.. :-(

Happy to wait until the next ABI breakage.. I'll upload libkdcraw 0.1.1 with 
the bumped soname, so it will go into NEW..
