[Pkg-kde-extras] Library versioning of libsynaptics - soname

Stefan,

I work with the Debian kde-extras team and we package your ksynaptics and
libsynaptics packages for the Debian distribution.

One of your common issues is the version mismatch between synaptics and
your libsynaptics. We have Debian users come back at us with this issue as
well, as we just upgraded the libraries, but delayed on the synaptics
applications while the libraries built across all architectures.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=413737

libtool does have a facility to enable the management of dependant libraries
across, by bumping the soname of the library when incompatible changes are made.

This is really important for packagers and binary distributions as it is really
the only way we can ensure our archives are in a steady state.

It also should help reduce the about of support requests you are getting as
you can ensure your synaptic applications depend on the correct library version
at build time.

Anyway all the details are in the libtool manual.

Hope this is of some use to you. We certainly would like to see it from a packaging
perspective.

Mark
