The issue comes up when I run 'kdesudo systemsettings' if that makes any difference; the point of that is to do administrative tasks in KDE 4.2.2's systemsettings and also I want to change the colour scheme for the Root user, but systemsettings is not working with kdesudo.  Seems to work with the other test cases here (at least, with the echo 1)

Also with other tests:
$ kdesudo konqueror
No protocol specified
konqueror: cannot connect to X server :0

$ kdesudo kate
No protocol specified
kate: cannot connect to X server :0
