Something more that I discovered today:

root at tinello:/etc# apt-get -t squeeze-backports install qemu-kvm

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  ipxe-qemu libiscsi1 libspice-server1 sharutils
The following packages will be upgraded:
  openbios-ppc openbios-sparc qemu-keymaps qemu-kvm qemu-system qemu-utils seabios vgabios

So there was a problem in recognizing domains with the old qemu-kvm.
Please note that I now remember that I have seen the above message in
the past, but unfortunately I did not actually pay attention.
