If that is bothering you too much and you think that this breakage is
not RC per se, then I (or you directly) can lower severity, I'll try
to remember it by other ways.

I think that by the end of the week, I'll either have written a fix or
abandoned hope of finding one in time for etch; getting one from
upstream is not going to happen.

If I can't fix it, we'll document the breakage in NEWS.Debian / etch
release notes / ...
