Just to say that I support your bug report as I ran in the exact same
problem after I installed mailman on etch.

I wanted to symlink /var/lib/mailman to /u/mailman (as /u is a larger
partition), and noticed the /var/lock/mailman & /var/log/mailman where
using relative symlinks, I had to recreate absolute symlinks for logs
and locks in order to for mailman to run.
