I’ve been thinking about it, but that creates more burden
on us because we cannot simply apply the patch from the
mailman-ssls project (which needs to be the first in that
case), change the entire packaging and build system, etc.

What do you think of the following solution (also, what
would the mailman-ssls developers say to it)?

I apply all the patches I had (that are reasonable) to the
Debian mailman package (and will maintain them for a fore-
seeable future), but revert the part of mailman-ssls that
changes global defaults (such as archival). Instead, I’ll
write a document detailing how to “secure” the installation
for use with a Secure List Server.
