Have you ever packaged any piece of software anew? If not, I recommend  
not starting with a desktop env like MATE.

Please give me an overview of your skills (references, github account,  
bug reports already filed, etc.).

For beginners I recommend choosing a software that you really love,  
that is not tooooo complex and that is not maintained in Debian (i.e.,  
it has never been uploaded or it is orphaned).
