Well, you have upgraded a system with a very outdated mc, but apparently mc itself wasn't upgraded, and now it broke your mc as a side-effect and you are asking what could be the problem? To be honest, no idea, the upgraded packages seem to be mostly irrelevant to the matter. It seems that you have some problem with a terminal emulator or how keys are delivered to the console applications... check that other applications like vim are still ok, remember whether you have changed anything in this area, see which sequences are delivered in cat. > Any suggestions what could happen to my system? First you can find out whether it's a user profile problem or a system-wide problem by creating a new user and running mc in there. -- Sincerely yours, Yury V. The problem is not only in xterm, but also on the console. I use fvwm2 with an unchanged configuration for 2 years now and it was the update which killed mc > >Any suggestions what could happen to my system? Since you are on amd64, systemd would probably work for you but if you have a non-technical problem with it (systemd fobia?) then just use SysV instead. Systemd is not mandatory on Debian even though it is a default init system. Alternatively you can stay on outdated system forever. Systemd is really not _that_ bad to give up on all the work that hundreds of contributors were doing all these years... -- Cheers, Dmitry Smirnov. --- However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results. -- Winston Churchill -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... This EMail was written with mutt and mcedit. However, if I switch back to mc internal editor, the problem reapear in mc, not in mcedit. The following file was empty (0 Bytes after I had deleted the directory) and opened in mc internal editor, then I hit enter to make a new-line and it showed me the dialog "Save - Cancel". ----[ ~/.local/share/mc/filepos ]--------------------------------------- width: 1050px;5 align: border="1" class="img_head"order: 12px soli4 img_head 40px;; ------------------------------------------------------------------------ and when I pressed ENTER of CANCEL or ESC, it past piece by piece the stuff, which are definitively patts of my CSS file of my web server. The question is, where does it come from? As we have already established, you have a problem with your profile and are running a version of mc outdated by many years on an outdated system. There is nothing I can do to help you further. You have to find out what is it exactly in your profile that is causing the problem. -- Sincerely yours, Yury V. Zaytsev
