Pretty much what you tried yourself, IIRC: I changed /dev/md1[01] for
/dev/md[01] in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf, ran update-initramfs, lilo and
rebooted.  (That's assuming I didn't forget to run update-initramfs, of
course.)

I'm not surprised it worked for you -- I tend to attract bad luck when
it comes to md, LVM and all that boot stuff.  <g>  (And I'm too clueless
about Debian's initramfs to have been able to debug anything.)
