Yes I see the issue, and I consider this is an important issue,
since it limits your ability to perform data recovery.

I just sent an one-liner patch to Neilb which fixes this issue,
and am hope to add this bugfix into the next Debian release of
mdadm package.  You can find it in the debian bugreport log.

Please excuse me it took so long.  Initially I had no time to
look at this issue, but later it got lost somehow.
