To follow up -

I updated my installation with Dylan's new packages. The new packages did not
generate the same errors that the older packages did (the string mis-match
error). Additionally, the new packages generated enough debugging through the
apache logs and by using the MonoDebug option (and then starting the
mono-server from the command line) to lead me to problems in my configuration.
I had the vhost value of the mono applications set to localhost and i was making
requests using an DNS hostname so the requests were being passed to mono-server
but were not being properly mapped to a mono application.

I am not sure what the root problem was, whether it was caused by incompatible
versions or by the simple configuration problem, but I am sure the newer
versions have better debugging to allow someone to figure out what the problem
is.

I hope the mono-server developers eventually adding logging of STDOUT to
mod-mono. I know of a couple components like log4net which fall back to STDOUT
as the last output option when things go wrong.
