I've just tried running the application on Windows via Mono and it also
doesn't work. So it really seems that there is some kind of problem with
Mono support.

Mono Windows version:

Mono JIT compiler version 3.3.0 (master/6cd4ddc)
Copyright (C) 2002-2012 Novell, Inc, Xamarin Inc and Contributors.
www.mono-project.com
        TLS: normal
        SIGSEGV: normal
        Notification: Thread + polling
        Architecture: x86
        Disabled: none
        Misc: softdebug
        LLVM: supported, not enabled.
        GC: sgen
