Ah, I didn't know there was a precendent even for "non-essential"
extensions.  I'm afraid that Pentadactyl is a much trickier case; there
is no release supporting 17.*, I'm not comfortable with uploading a
revision from the upstream VCS to stable, and even a minimal patch would
be an invasive mess.  As 24.0 ESR is scheduled to be released next week
it would be silly not to keep it in mind as well, and that situation is
even worse.

You're right, and I'm afraid a removal does seem like the only feasible
option to me.
