I have tried to integrate them, but using dpkg I get left over with an
almost empty directory hierarchy .... I have not looked into this in
depth, but this makes me wonder, why do we need to move anything at
all? Shouldn't dpkg take care to remove the old thunderbird files?

I see that I don't have such a migration script for
mozilla-thunderbird -> thunderbird migration and afaik it worked well
in many cases?
