backport patches for RC release

I quite don't get this version number. Next 1.8.1 release is and
next 1.8.0 release supposedly Typo ?

Anyways, I took a quick look at the patches, and I don't see what
visibility_gcc_fixes.patch is supposed to be for. We already have
similar fixes. Or are they workarounds that have been applied upstream
in to avoid pulling the real fix from trunk ?
