I have a fresh unstable install to hand on which I put cups and
iceweasel 6.0. The printer is networked and Iceweasel displayed its
queues. One queue has a default resolution of 1200dpi but the print
dialogue in Iceweasel offers 300 DPI for Print Quality. So, no
improvement.

It can be worked round to get the correct default by altering the ppd as
I have described. The printer driver is Generic PostScript Printer.
