That's a long time ago... IIRC, the goal when I looked at mpd was to
provide a fixed playlist (set up by the admin) to remote users, who
get music delivered to their own computers. But each user should be
able to choose the current position in the playlist.

Perhaps mpd is not the right tool, or the documentation was unclear.
