only on i386. There it doesn't matter and shared libraries work fine. On
other architectures this leads to segmentation faults.

Darrent, thanks for your hint, this works perfectly. ffmpeg now builds
cleanly with -O0 if used without mmx specific code and without
-fPIC. I'll add this to the package and upload in a few hours if nobody
objects.
