Hmm. I recall this being mentioned wrt xine-lib's internal ffmpeg snapshot a
while ago: it worked fine (FSVO "fine") with gcc <= 4.2, but not at all with
4.3 (and it still fails). My preference here is that, unless the patches can
be ported or recreated, -fPIC should not be used for i386 builds.

(BTW, "flavor"? Ugh. 'Merkian spelling and what appears to me to be 'Merkian
usage...)
