yeah, actually I didn't want to do that many changes for lenny, but
since you seem to be willing to do the work (i.e. getting it in shape
for lenny) I won't veto that.

IIRC --enable-mmx breaks all shared builds. but I need to confirm that
as well. perhaps we should document that in debian/rules and/or in the bts
