Yes, it's a shame that ffmpeg upstream does not even attempt to 
provide a stabile API, not to mention stable release tarballs, while 
OTOH it is such a crucial library for nearly all free media players 
out there.

BTW, how is the situation "out there"? Is the MPlayer team considered 
upstream for ffmpeg and all other players like VLC, Xine and GStreamer 
maintain their own forks?

Yes, I have allready tried to reproduce the Debian tarball via SVN 
export, but I got a 900k diff. Please read
