 IMO they don't, but watch out for other headers and where they set the
 visibility (probably in configure.ac or Makefile.am).  From what I
 read, these changes will use the default visibility for symbols in the
 headers (the ones between push and pop, so all if I read correctly),
 implying that they use this system to hide the other symbols -- not in
 the headers.

 It will probably change the ABI, but the dropped symbols were not in
 public headers, so were not part of the supported API/ABI and so don't
 warrant a SONAME bump.

 I fear it's not a terribly portable way to do it though, but that's not
 our problem.
