Apologies, I misunderstood how far does the stripping process go and
what should be attributed to stripping and what to realities of syncing
different software releases. 

In any case realistically the lenny vlc version cannot have that
functionality so anyone who needs it should be referred to trying to
build 0.9x from testing. Which in turn fails to build around the end
because the line in debian/rules where vlc refreshes the plugin cache
needs a - in front (or some extra flags) as it will throw an error if
run as root.
