No, I don't *need* to.

Even if you build --with-ffmpeg=system the ffmpeg libraries are 
dlopened from audacity. Audacity does not get linked against these 
libs, so our packages don't have hard depends against the ffmpeg libs. 
AFAIUI it only uses the headers installed on the system and choses a 
sane preset for the library file names to look for in the preferences 
dialog.

Personally, I'd rather have a hard dependency of audacity against the 
ffmpeg libraries, because it is not warranted that the library which 
you choose to dlopen is the same as the one you took the headers from. 
I fear this *might* impose problems...
