The future of (professional) digital audio in Debian

Hi!

I just compiled the whole toolchain for a pro-audio DAW today. It
probably looks like this:

   http://adi.loris.tv/ardour-calf-lv2.png

This basically is ardour with the LV2 version of calf, all running on
top of FFADO, glued together by jackd.

Workflow is very convenient, it feels like Cubase: open a project, get
total recall from your plugin settings (thanks to LV2), editing with
ardour is even faster for me than with Cubase.

I'd like all this to be possible with plain Debian sid in a few months.
So here's my sketched roadmap:

   1) wait for lv2core to hit unstable (it's in NEW right now)
   2) upload slv2 once we have lv2core
   3) also upload calf once we have lv2core
   4) compile ardour with LV2 support once we have slv2

Steps 2 and 3 can be done at the same time.

Everything shown above is already possible with the packages we have on
git.debian.org, so it boils down to uploading and probably tweaking the
build-deps of ardour. Users might employ git-buildpackage right now to
get the same feature set.

I'm going to update the calf package before uploading, there are several
new upstream versions, but as long as lv2core isn't available in
unstable, I'm not wasting storage on git.debian.org. ;)

Cheerio

PS: I hardly dare to present, but just in case somebody is interested,
here's the audio mixdown: <http://adi.loris.tv/forgiven.ogg>
I have to apologize for the genre, it was simply a test job when singer
Sindy came to me and asked for a recording. (Yes, the 90th are over)

All sounds were played on a Korg microX, everything was live, so timings
are a bit off. Treatment to the vocals: Low-Cut (as seen on the right,
Calf filter), a compressor (Calf, too) for bringing the voice more to
the front and the Calf Vintage Delay as a simple effect.

All in all, I spent only two hours, so this is far away from chart
quality, nothing was planned, just improvised on this little microX to
get hands-on experience with ardour.

Bottom line: Linux pro-audio is making progress.
