Yes, that's an annoyance of the 0.9.x series which is fixed upstream.
There is a package of vlc 1.0.0-rc2 on its way to experimental but it
has to go through NEW first.

In the meantime you can use VLC_VERBOSE

% VLC_VERBOSE=0 cvlc --quiet vlc://quit
VLC media player 0.9.9a Grishenko
%
