I had this opinion as well for quite some time, but while working in
pkg-multimedia, I got used to it. After having been forced to use it for
some months, I have to admit that I even enjoy using it.

Sure, no problem. Importing source packages is much easier anyway
compared to importing svn commits, because in git, we import the whole
source and in svn the debian/ directory only.
