Hello,

while backporting mplayer 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu4 to jaunty I
saw, that mplayer has many lintian warnings. Because I have not the time
to fix them you find the report from lintian enclosed. So everyone who
want to help, here is your change. spelling-error-in-binary and
hyphen-used-as-minus-sign can be fixed easily.

Cheers,
Benjamin

I: mplayer source: debian-watch-file-is-missing
N:
N: This source package is not Debian-native but it does not have a
N: debian/watch file. This file is used for automatic detection of new
N: upstream versions by the Debian External Health Status project and other
N: project infrastructure. If this package is maintained upstream, please
N: consider adding a debian/watch file to detect new releases.
N:
N: If the package is not maintained upstream or if upstream uses a
N: distribution mechanism that cannot be meaningfully monitored by uscan
N: and the Debian External Health Status project, please consider adding a
N: debian/watch file containing only comments documenting the situation.
N:
N: Refer to Debian Policy Manual section 4.11 (Optional upstream source
N: location: debian/watch) and the uscan(1) manual page for details.

N: Severity: wishlist, Certainty: certain
N:
I: mplayer source: binary-control-field-duplicates-source field "section" in package mplayer
N:
N: In debian/control, this field for a binary package duplicates the value
N: inherited from the source package paragraph. This doesn't hurt anything,
N: but you may want to take advantage of the inheritance and set the value
N: in only one place. It prevents missing duplicate places that need to be
N: fixed if the value ever changes.
N:
N: Severity: wishlist, Certainty: certain

I: mplayer source: binary-control-field-duplicates-source field "section" in package mplayer-nogui
I: mplayer source: duplicate-short-description mplayer mplayer-nogui
N:
N: The listed binary packages all share the same short description (the
N: first line of the Description control field). The package names may
N: provide enough additional information to distinguish between the
N: packages, but it's common to also add a word or two to the short
N: description to clarify the difference.
N:
N: Severity: wishlist, Certainty: possible
N:
I: mplayer source: quilt-patch-missing-description 23mplayer-debug-printf.patch
N:
N: quilt patch files should start with a description of patch. All lines
N: before the start of the patch itself are considered part of the
N: description. You can edit the description with quilt header -e when the
N: patch is at the top of the stack.
N:
N: As well as a description of the purpose and function of the patch, the
N: description should ideally contain author information, a URL for the bug
N: report (if any), Debian or upstream bugs fixed by it, upstream status,
N: the Debian version and date the patch was first included, and any other
N: information that would be useful if someone were investigating the patch
N: and underlying problem.
N:
N: Severity: wishlist, Certainty: certain
N:
I: mplayer: hyphen-used-as-minus-sign usr/share/man/man1/gmplayer.1.gz:1879
N:
N: Manual page seems to contain a hyphen where a minus sign was intended.
N: "-" chars are interpreted as hyphens (U+2010) by groff, not as minus
N: signs (U+002D). Since options to programs use minus signs (U+002D), this
N: means for example in UTF-8 locales that you cannot cut&paste options,
N: nor search for them easily.
N:
N: "-" must be escaped ("\-") to be interpreted as minus. If you really
N: intend a hyphen, write it as "\(hy" to emphasise that fact. See groff(7)
N: and especially groff_char(7) for details, and also the thread starting
N: with
N: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/debian-devel-200303/msg01481.h
N: tml
N:
N: If you use some tool that converts your documentation to groff format,
N: it might be possible that this tool converts dashes of any kind to groff
N: hyphens, while the safe way of converting dashes is usually to convert
N: them to "\-".
N:
N: Because this error can occur very often we show only the first 10
N: occurrences for each man page and give the number of suppressed
N: occurrences. If you want to see all warnings, run lintian with the
N: -d/--debug option.

W: mplayer: non-standard-executable-perm usr/share/pixmaps/mplayer.xpm 0655 != 0755
N:
N: Executables that are not setuid or setgid should always have a mode of
N: 0755. Since anyone can obtain the executable by downloading the Debian
N: package and extracting it, restricting access serves little purpose.
N:
N: Refer to Debian Policy Manual section 10.9 (Permissions and owners) for
N: details.

X: mplayer: spelling-error-in-binary ./usr/bin/gmplayer abitrate arbitrate
N:
N: Lintian found a spelling error in the given binary. Lintian has a list
N: of common misspellings that it looks for. It does not have a dictionary
N: like a spelling checker does. For Lintian's convenience all words are
N: normalised to lower case.
N:
N: If the string containing the spelling error is translated with the help
N: of gettext or a similar tool, please fix the error in the translations
N: as well as the English text to avoid making the translations fuzzy. With
N: gettext, for example, this means you should also fix the spelling
N: mistake in the corresponding msgids in the *.po files.
N:
N: To find the original word you can run:
N:
N: strings <binary> | grep -i <word>
N:
N: You can often find the word in the source code by running:
N:
N: grep -r '\b<original-word>\b' <source-tree>
N:
N: Severity: normal, Certainty: wild-guess
N:
N: This tag is marked experimental, which means that the code that
N: generates it is not as well-tested as the rest of Lintian and might
N: still give surprising results. Feel free to ignore experimental tags
N: that do not seem to make sense, though of course bug reports are always
N: welcomed.

N:
N: This man page provokes warnings or errors from man.
N:
N: "cannot adjust" or "can't break" are trouble with paragraph filling,
N: usually related to long lines. Adjustment can be helped by left
N: justifying, breaks can be helped with hyphenation, see "Manipulating
N: Filling and Adjusting" and "Manipulating Hyphenation" in the manual.
N:
N: "can't find numbered character" usually means latin1 etc in the input,
N: and this warning indicates characters will be missing from the output.
N: You can change to escapes like \[:a] described on the groff_char man
N: page.
N:
N: Other warnings are often formatting typos, like missing quotes around a
N: string argument to .IP. These are likely to result in lost or malformed
N: output. See the groff_man (or groff_mdoc if using mdoc) man page for
N: information on macros.
N:
N: This test uses man's --warnings option to enable groff warnings that
N: catch common mistakes, such as putting . or ' characters at the start of
N: a line when they are intended as literal text rather than groff
N: commands. This can be fixed either by reformatting the paragraph so that
N: these characters are not at the start of a line, or by adding a
N: zero-width space (\&) immediately before them.
N:
N: At worst, warning messages can be disabled with the .warn directive, see
N: "Debugging" in the groff manual.
N:
N: To test this for yourself you can use the following command:
N: LANG=C man --warnings -l manpage-file >/dev/null
