Hi!

Here's the backtrace I got from a quick try:

#0  0xb7d1462c in _int_malloc (av=0xb7e01140, bytes=12) at malloc.c:4130
#1  0xb7d165a5 in *__GI___libc_malloc (bytes=12) at malloc.c:3551
#2  0xb67b2dcd in qMalloc () from /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4
#3  0xb67d9d00 in QHashData::allocateNode () from /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4
#4  0xb68b8240 in qt_addObject () from /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4
#5  0xb68b83e6 in QObject::QObject () from /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4
#6  0xb67b5370 in QThread::QThread () from /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4
#7  0xb67b5f2e in ?? () from /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4

With QT debug symbols:

#0  0xb7d9d62c in _int_malloc (av=0xab400010, bytes=92) at malloc.c:4130
#1  0xb7d9f5a5 in *__GI___libc_malloc (bytes=92) at malloc.c:3551
#2  0xb2406037 in operator new () from /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6
#3  0xb683c2d6 in QMutex (this=0xa8f09600, mode=QMutex::NonRecursive)

    at thread/qthread_p.h:102

    at thread/qthread.cpp:356
#8  0xb683ef2e in QAdoptedThread (this=0xa8f09498, data=0xa8f09398)
    at thread/qthread.cpp:157

The segfault is only triggered when you use the QT-GUI, "cvlc" or "nvlc"
are both not affected.

When you search the web for "vlc subtitle segfault", you'll find more
users facing this problem, at least one of them on FC10:

   http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=55504

valgrind says:

==588== Process terminating with default action of signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
==588== Bad permissions for mapped region at address 0xB708FFC
==588==    at 0xA8A06AC: QReadWriteLock::lockForWrite()
(qreadwritelock.cpp:272)

I feel this is an upstream bug, nothing specific to Debian. That's why
I suggest to forward the bug to the vlc developers. (though it may turn
out to be a QT bug ;)
