I suspect that to be a buildd issue as well.

btw, I've sucessfully build  mplayer on mips by hand (not all build
dependencies are available in the sid chroot), with and without
injecting -fPIC -DPIC. Moreover pusling could reproduce the exact
problem on his private mips machine. I've just asked him to attach his
build log.

I therefore have to come to the conclusion that it must be either a bug
in our debian/rules, in the combination of our configure flags, or (most
likely) a misconfigured other library that is being linked against the
mplayer binary.
