If you have never worked with version control before, you should probably 
start by reading some introductory tutorial on how they work. 
http://betterexplained.com/articles/a-visual-guide-to-version-control/ looks 
like its good. It uses subversion to give examples instead of git, but when 
you get the basic concepts of version control everything will be much easier. 
Look for other tutorials or introductions on google, there are plenty of them 
around.
