That can be one source of problem. But if it's really the same bug as
describe by previous reporter it's some bug between VLC's x11/xvideo
module and the video card drivers. Not a libavcodec problem.

So Ben can you try the other thing suggested like -V x11 or -V sdl
(installing vlc-plugin-sdl first)
