Right after writing this mail, Uoti approached me again and corrected
some points of my email:

 - his mplayer branch has libavcodec, libavformat, libass,
etc. removed. that branch requires them to be available externally.

 - we discussed back and forth, and in the end, we agreed a
mplayer-snapshot providing ffmpeg libraries that replace the ones
from the system is not exactly a great idea.

The simplest solution maintenance wise would probably be to just update
the current package to a newer svn version.

With here we have two options:

 a. just update the system libraries
 b. install in a separate directory

Both approaches should be rather straight forward to do, although for
b., we should probably edit the .pc files to add appropriate -rpath
linker flags.

(I guess this is the lool's is essentially proposing b., right?)

I wonder if approach b. would break the ld-linux.so's hwcaps mechanism.

Besides, having yet another outdated random snapshot is
suboptimal. (well, still better than the current state though, since we
do not want 'regular' distro applications to link against this. Still,
how often do we want to update such a snapshot package? and who is
volunteering to keep it up to date?
