This was explained in the mailing list. Apologies for not CCing the bug.

Patches to upstream were submitted, but they are not going to be applied. 
Basically, the use of the mp4ff stuff from faad2 is discouraged by upstream. You 
may read for yourself at [1].

So in Debian, it's been decided not to ship any of the mp4ff libraries or 
headers at all. You should consider using ffmpeg or mp4v2 if it's your code.
