VLC provides a global hotkey system (to use media keys even when VLC is
not focused) since 1.0, but this plugin is not built/enabled in the
Debian version. The file should be there:
/usr/lib/vlc/control/libglobalhotkeys_plugin.so
I tested by downloading the version of the file from the Videolan site
and installing the libxcb-keysyms0 package (now replaced by libxcb-keysyms1,
iirc) and it works as it should. I hope that the plugin is able to be
built against libxcb-keysyms1; I think that on the VideoLAN site they
don't mandate a specific version so it should work.
