Trying your way and having some errors here:
$ git-buildpackage -S
[snip]
debuild: fatal error at line 1251:
running debsign failed
debuild -i -I returned 29
Couldn't run 'debuild -i -I -S'

Should I edit /etc/git-buildpackage/gbp.conf file anyway?
Something like "sign-tags = False"
