Bug#595452: mplayer: Fails to play recent Matroska (MKV) files: "Track 1 has been compressed with an unknown/unsupported compression algorithm (3)"

I recently encountered several Matroska (MKV) files that mplayer cannot play.
For a couple of examples, try

mplayer says:
[mkv] Track 1 has been compressed with an unknown/unsupported compression
[mkv] algorithm (3). Skipping track.
[mkv] Track ID 1: video (V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC), -vid 0
[mkv] Track ID 2: audio (A_VORBIS), -aid 0, -alang und
[mkv] Will play video track 1.

This then leads to errors playing the video track later:

Those messages repeat forever until I Ctrl-C mplayer.

totem plays the same file without issue.
