I've been asking on #libav-devel for what's going on here, see this
transscript:

12:13 <siretart> j-b: has the libdca-devel mailing list been closed? it seems that mails sent there are being rejected.
12:14 <siretart> j-b: or is libdca dead/orphaned anyways?
12:14 <j-b> siretart: it is closed-post
12:15 <kshishkov> siretart: we have Libav decoder with more features even
12:15 <merbzt> siretart: dont bother with libdca anymore
12:15 <siretart> j-b: so where should bugreports for libcda go to?
12:15 <merbzt> siretart: /dev/null
12:15 <siretart> I see
12:15 <merbzt> just remove the package for debian
12:15 <siretart> thanks for clarifying it, I'll then see to get it removed from debian
12:15 <j-b> siretart: to the mailing list
12:16 <merbzt> I take support for the libav decoder
12:16 <siretart> j-b: you mean the mailing list that does not accept mails? ;-)
12:16 <j-b> siretart: removing libdca support breaks spdif
12:16 <j-b> siretart: it does accept mails from people on the mailing list
12:16 <kshishkov> merbzt: is it a consequence that libavcodec/dca.c lists both of us as authors?
12:16 <av500> j-b: breaks why?
12:16 <av500> you need libdca to not decode dca?
12:16 <j-b> av500: yes :D
12:17 <siretart> 550 5.1.1 <libdca-devel at videolan.org>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table (in
reply to RCPT TO command) -- that's a pretty confusing in that case then
12:17 <av500> then call it libnotdca
12:17 <superdump> https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=608892
12:17 <merbzt> kshishkov: yeah
12:18 <kshishkov> j-b: probably you just need frame parser from it
12:19 <av500> kshishkov: are the frames not nicely split?
12:19 <kshishkov> av500: who knows?
12:19 <j-b> kshishkov: maybe. The fact is that the module that output spdif depends on libdca (resp. liba52) and that the
avcodec module doesn't work as an audio filter
12:20 <j-b> kshishkov: this is a known moronic idea of VLC audio output
12:20 <j-b> kshishkov: it will be fixed when someone does it
12:20 <av500> j-b: url?
12:21 <j-b> av500: http://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=tree;f=modules/audio_filter/converter;hb=HEAD
12:21 <kshishkov> j-b: apropå, how's our RM demuxer versus yours now?
12:21 <av500> written by DVD Jon?
12:21 <av500> omg, holy code
12:21 <j-b> courmisch has started to fix it, but it ain't finished
12:22 [av500 wont touch that]
12:22 <j-b> kshishkov: I have on my list of votes: "denote real demuxer under lavf" for VDD
12:22 <av500> dtstospdif.c?
12:22 <j-b> http://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=blob;f=modules/codec/dts.c;hb=HEAD is the packetizer
12:23 <j-b> kshishkov: to be honest, I need to check if your new code fixes all the crashes we had for rmvb
12:23 <av500> j-b: but that does not include "dca.h"
12:23 <j-b> food time, but we need to discuss this, this week-end
12:24 <merbzt> j-b: you do know we have a spdif muxer in lavf do you ?

Let's check what actually uses libdca in debian:

siretart at ries:~$ apt-cache rdepends libdca0
libdca0
Reverse Depends:
  vlc-nox
  libdca-utils
  libdca-dev
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

As seen in the IRC query, vlc is being worked on to use libav*
directly. Not sure about gstreamer. Sebastian, can you please check what
would break if we removed libdca from Debian?
