It was recommended on the mp4v2 project homepage at that time.

FAAC has added support for the new API in the not-yet-released development
version in CVS, thanks to the work of Sebastien Noel et al.

FWIW, the APIs may have been deprecated for years, but as long as there
are no release in that time, noone will notice. Just my 2 cents.
