OK, I managed to work it in this weekend.

Here's the console log from the install:

----------

Selecting previously deselected package mwavem.
(Reading database ... 93141 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking mwavem (from mwavem_2.0-4~5_i386.deb) ...
Setting up mwavem (2.0-4~5) ...
.udevdb or .udev presence implies active udev. Aborting MAKEDEV invocation.
Starting Mwave modem support: mwavemd.
Processing triggers for man-db ...

----------

Here's the output from /var/log/syslog:

----------

mwavemd: Started the Mwave manager ...
mwavemd: Initializing mwave manager...
mwavemd: Initializing modem specific code...
mwavemd: Got configured startup speed: 64000...
mwavemd:
mwavemd: Checking configured speed...
mwavemd: Setting modem speed...
mwavemd: Loading modem DSP...
mwavemd: mwave modem, STARTED...
mwavemd: ... successful. Now checking for modem device file ...
mwavemd: ... successful. Modem is available at /dev/Mwave-modem.
mwavemd:

----------

I also did a "dpkg -P mwavem" to see if the de-installation scripts worked OK.
Here's what I got on the console:

----------

(Reading database ... 93228 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing mwavem ...
Stopping Mwave modem support: mwavemd.
Purging configuration files for mwavem ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...

----------

And here's what I got in /var/log/syslog:

----------

mwavemd: Cleaning up, unlinking /dev/Mwave-modem and exiting.

----------

It looks like everything works perfectly. After installing the package
again, I am currently connected to the Internet via a PPP connection
using this modem as I compose and send this e-mail. After all, that is
the most important test: "Does the modem work?" And it does.
Thanks for all your efforts.
