Yeah - it's an interesting quandry.

I think (know) we're about to start seeing a slew of community-supported
MySQL trees pop up. Much of this goodness will be beneficial, but some
will not be... but we don't really want to be in the business of
maintaining forks.

I don't know what the answer is. But perhaps you're right and we should
at least avoid them for now.
