It might as well be some kind of problem during upgrade ... I assume
this happened after upgrading and not on a new install, right?

Else, it seems the build somehow got corrupted or maybe gcc is producing
a damaged executable [cfr #554207]
(I assume Norbert tested the build before uploading ....)
Since this release fixes a FTBFS with gcc-4.4, the symbol table might
have got mangled ... the output from nm will confirm this.
