We > can't have all 3 (or 4?) of them. > I've answered already. There are people willing to do work on all of them, and they are significantly different from each-other. Some of those people are actually paid to do this work. I understand this is more work for security, and I don't want to say we have to ship all of them. I'm saying that nobody is going to step forward and say "not mine" and nobody is going to step forward and say "only mine", in part because some people think all three are important. Fedora made their decision with a steering committee, and I believe that decision was at least in part motivated by a business feud between RedHat and Oracle. I don't know if the CTTE would have to be involved, but it may be the only way to choose a course of action unless I am mistaken and members of this team are willing to nominate some of the forks for non-inclusion. My personal feeling is that we should include the ones that have a company ready to stake their reputation on it by committing publicly to maintaining it for the life of Jessie. Oracle? Percona? MariaDB? Want your fork in Debian? Let us know! -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... We can't have all 3 (or 4?) of them. we really have two 'forks' right now: mysql-5.5 (default mysql - provides libmysqlclient-dev which the rest of the archive builds against) mariadb-5.5 and one derivative: percona-xtradb-cluster-5.5 which is percona-server-5.5 (not in Debian) built with galera replication extensions - its mysql compatible but quite distinct product from mysql-5.5 or mariadb-5.5. I would maintain that mysql-5.5 has to stay in release this late in cycle, switching to mariadb-5.5 would mean a full transition, and that percona-xtradb-cluster-5.5 is a sufficiently distinct product to remain in for release as well. So that really just leaves mariadb-5.5 (or mariadb-10 - I know Otto has been busy working on this) up for debate; my take is still that if there is sufficient resource maintaining mariadb-5.5 (which I think there is - thanks to Otto), or any other fork, that it should still be considered for release. I hope my track record of working on mariadb-5.5 and now also on mariadb-10.0 has proven that I am responsive and a reliable resource. I already maintain the security releases of mariadb-5.5 on Ubuntu 14.04 and doing them in parallel for Debian is easy and has left me enough time to also improve and expand the packaging. There is no reason to drop mariadb-5.5 - other than if we upgrade to mariadb-10.0, which has started to seem likely thanks to new DDs who have appeared and are contributing to the effort. There's one more issue. MySQL 5.6 is already almost 2 years old. 5.7 is probably released before jessie+1, but the recommended upgrade path is 5.5 -> 5.6 -> 5.7, so there should be one release with 5.6 first in order to provide an upgrade path. It's not something we recommend. I know people successfully have skipped 5.5 when going from 5.1 to 5.6. I haven't tried going directly from 5.5 to 5.7 yet, but idea of making such leaps makes me a bit uneasy. > That would be most unfortunate. I still don't think we can ship 5.6 in > jessie if there are ABI issues. There's an ABI issue, but it only affects installations that use a PAM plugin for authentication on the MySQL server. We've found only two packages that _may_ be broken by the upgrade. They match the search for the broken part of the ABI, so we suggest they rebuild just to make sure. No packages are confirmed broken (and again, they would only be broken in certain setups). So, yes, an ABI breakage, but a minor one that I think is manageable. Regards, Norvald H. Getting a permission statement for a GPL-OpenSSL exception (which basically is only needed for Debian as others don't interpret GPL in such a strict way) from all of MariaDB/MySQL copyright holders is an impossible task for a packager like me. For 10.0 I've now switched using the bundled YaSSL in commit http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mariadb-10.0.git/commit/?id=477bad781a9338ff6542d71c78432b387dedb05f and so far builds and tests suites have passed OK. If Debian starts to ship YaSSL as a package we could start to rely on a distro provided build dependency, or if CYaSSL develops to be on par with YaSSL in terms of OpenSSL API compatibility and upstream MariaDB would adopt their fork to it, we in Debian could also switch to CYaSSL and benefit of using a distro packaged build dependency. Until then, the bundled YaSSL is our solution. The same applies also for the Debian MySQL packages. It is my understanding that the CYaSSL developers are working on making it work to build MySQL against CYaSSL, and that should be sufficient to make MariaDB work as well. Message-ID: Package: mysql-server-5.5 Version: 5.5.39-1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, The mysql-server-5.5 .deb lacks a systemd .service file. * What led up to the situation? Saltstack (salt-master .deb) is unable to manage mysql-server on a system running systemd. A /lib/systemd/system/mysql.service file will address this. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Potentially the salt systemd module can be expanded to manage services running in SysVinit compatibility mode. Some simple tweaks of the salt module were insufficient. The /etc/init.d/mysql script is more sophisticated than most. It does not lend itself to a simple .service implementation. * Additional information: There is a similar Fedora bug that has been addressed and closed: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=714426 It appears this was addressed with a combination of a .service file as well as some additional scripts. -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (700, 'testing'), (300, 'unstable'), (200, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.16-2-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages mysql-server-5.5 depends on: ii adduser 3.113+nmu3 ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.53 ii initscripts 2.88dsf-53.4 ii libc6 2.19-11 ii libdbi-perl 1.631-3+b1 ii libgcc1 1:4.9.1-16 ii libstdc++6 4.9.1-16 ii lsb-base 4.1+Debian13 ii mysql-client-5.5 5.5.39-1 ii mysql-common 5.5.39-1 ii mysql-server-core-5.5 5.5.39-1 ii passwd 1:4.2-2+b1 ii perl 5.20.1-1 ii psmisc 22.21-2 ii zlib1g 1:1.2.8.dfsg-2 Versions of packages mysql-server-5.5 recommends: ii libhtml-template-perl 2.95-1 Versions of packages mysql-server-5.5 suggests: ii mailutils [mailx] 1:2.99.98-1.4 pn tinyca -- debconf information: mysql-server/no_upgrade_when_using_ndb: mysql-server-5.5/start_on_boot: true mysql-server-5.5/postrm_remove_databases: false mysql-server-5.5/really_downgrade: false mysql-server-5.5/nis_warning: mysql-server/error_setting_password: mysql-server/password_mismatch: From otto at seravo.fi Wed Oct 15 19:27:11 2014 From: otto at seravo.fi (Otto =?UTF-8?Q?Kek=C3=A4l=C3=A4inen?=) Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2014 22:27:11 +0300 Subject: [debian-mysql] Bug#765425: Bug#765425: mysql-server-5.5: mysql-sever lacks a systemd .service file. However, IMO this is mostly a waste of time. MySQL is an application, and isn't going to be part of early-boot plumbing any time soon. So having a systemd service is entirely for style points. In the long run though we definitely need more DDs and DMs in this team as the packages are big and complex currently I think there isn't enough man power here. To facilitate that we should discuss our plans openly and actively here on the list and document stuff in good commit messages and the wiki, that way we are transparent and inclusive. I have for example a public todo list at https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/MySQL/MariaDBPlan#TODO so people can pick up task from there if they want to. Of course the bug reports against our packages is also a good listing of things that need to should be done. - Otto From carnil at debian.org Fri Oct 17 07:40:13 2014 From: carnil at debian.org (Salvatore Bonaccorso) Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2014 09:40:13 +0200 Subject: [debian-mysql] Bug#765663: mysql-5.5: Multiple security fixes from October 2014 CPU Message-ID: <20141017074013.16140.1881.reportbug@eldamar.local> Source: mysql-5.5 Version: 5.5.23-2 Severity: grave Tags: security upstream fixed-upstream Hi Please see: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/cpuoct2014-1972960.html#AppendixMSQL Regards, Salvatore From carnil at debian.org Fri Oct 17 07:43:44 2014 From: carnil at debian.org (Salvatore Bonaccorso) Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2014 09:43:44 +0200 Subject: [debian-mysql] Bug#765664: mariadb-5.5: Multiple security fixes from October 2014 CPU could affect MariaDB Message-ID: <20141017074344.17521.55149.reportbug@eldamar.local> Source: mariadb-5.5 Version: 5.5.39-1 Severity: grave Tags: security upstream Hi Oracle has released the October CPU, see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/cpuoct2014-1972960.html#AppendixMSQL As MariaDB 5.5 and MySQL 5.5 have same code basis all of the MySQL 5.5 issues might also affect MariaDB (thus choosen same severity). Take this as personal point of view so far: So the idea is to get MariaDB 10 into Jessie? Note that the freeze is coming soon and any new ustream version need to be in testing on 5th of november. AFAIR from the last discussion in the "MySQL in Jessie" mail thread the idea was to have MariaDB 5.5 in Jessie (mail from Colin Charles), stating that EOL for it is in april 2017, and commitment to support it was done also to Red Hat and SuSE. Thus my personal opinion: don't know if that would be a good idea to try to push 10.x into Jessie at this stage of the preparation for the Jessie release. > From 5.5.40 on it seems the CVE information is also available in the > release notes: https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb/development/release-notes/mariadb-5540-release-notes/ Thank you, this as the first one is really helpful. Thus my personal opinion: don't know if > that would be a good idea to try to push 10.x into Jessie at this > stage of the preparation for the Jessie release. MariaDB 10.0 is now uploaded to unstable. On the list I meant to say that shipping 5.5 is not bad, it is not "too old". But 10.0 would be better and indeed multiple new sponsors appeared since and have contributed because they want to see 10.0 in Jessie. According to MariaDB website the support period for 10.0 will be at least as long as for 5.5. From norvald.ryeng at oracle.com Fri Oct 24 07:49:34 2014 From: norvald.ryeng at oracle.com (Norvald H. Ryeng) Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2014 09:49:34 +0200 Subject: [debian-mysql] Backporting the mysql_no_login plugin Message-ID: Hi package maintainers, We have a new plugin in MySQL 5.7 that makes it possible to have accounts that can't log in: CREATE USER foo at localhost IDENTIFIED WITH 'mysql_no_login'; The mysql_no_login plugin simply denies all login attempts. This is useful for users that are created, e.g., to serve as proxy users, or as owners of stored programs/functions, views or events. This new plugin doesn't fix known security defects in the server, but does provide new and better means to harden security. Best practices for security include application of least-required privileges, and in some cases, that means no client connections for privileged accounts. This new plugin provides means to implement such restrictions in a standard way. Because of the security benefits, we'd like to discuss backporting it to 5.6. Like you, we don't like big changes to GA releases, but this time we think it has a good use case, it's safe and has a very low risk of regressions: - Since this is a plugin, it doesn't touch server code - All new code is in a plugin that must be enabled explicitly by the DBA - The code itself is very simple. It's only one line of "real" code (unconditionally return authentication failure), plus necessary plugin plumbing to fill out the plugin API. If we backport this to 5.6, there are multiple ways to avoid it: - Apply a patch from us to remove the plugin - Don't build it - Build it, but don't ship it - Build and ship it, but don't use it (in any case, the DBA has to enable it and alter the user accounts to use it) So what do you think about backporting this? The only thing you'll notice is one more file in the plugins directory. SQL (Structured Query Language) is the most popular database query language in the world. The main goals of MariaDB are speed, robustness and ease of use. This package includes compatibility symlinks to allow sources expecting the MySQL client libraries to be built against the MariaDB Client Library for C." The full contents are: https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/libmariadb-client-lgpl-dev-compat/filelist so it won't work with packages expecting mysql_config to give them the flags -> it should also ship a mysql_config -> mariadb_config link.
