would these happen to be the single quote as in ascii 0x27, or the often
used "acute accent", which is iso-8859-1 code 0xB4?

are there any other low-ascii characters that disappear?  perhaps
` or $ ?  i'm trying to figure out if it's stripping out high ascii,
or whether it's a safety check removing characters.
