fwiw, i'm using this to solve that problem:

the guarantee is maybe a bit weaker (the script could lose its +x
bit or there could be a bug in it or something), but i've found the
tradeoff of being able to easily merge upstream releases and directly
patch/compile/debug is worth it.  it oculd be that ./debian-only with
gbp+pristine-tar could solve that too, but last time i looked pristine-tar
didn't support multiple branches, which i consider a hard requirement.
